Dr. Jonas Salk administered his polio vaccine
On February 23rd 1954, Dr. Jonas Salk administered his newly-created polio vaccine to children from the Arsenal Elementary School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Hailed as one of the most effective and revolutionary medical feats in the modern age, for its potential global reach, the Polio vaccine that Dr. Salk developed cured all three stereotypes of the virus.
The epidemic was a worldwide phenomenon and countries around the world soon began implementing polio immunization through the order of the Salk vaccine. Though not quite eradicated on a global scale, the number of reported cases is at an all-time low.
If polio were eradicated, it would be (only) the third disease to be successfully eliminated (after smallpox and rinderpest).
