Following a stellar military career, Caesar acceeded to the post of Dictator for Life of the Roman Republic.
Stabbed to death by some sixty of his own senators, Caesar died in the Curia Pompeia as he was set to address the Senate.
The historical importance of Caesar, as well as the Roman Empire, are such that "Caesar" was often synonymous with "emperor", long after the Roman Empire fell.
