Born in Japan in 1929, Kusama expressed interest in art from the young age of ten.
Moving to New York in 1958, she established herself as a central figure in the avant-garde scene in the 1960s. She is known for her multidisciplinary art, exploring painting, sculpture, drawing, film, writing, fashion design, performance and installation art, among others.
Her childhood, marred by World War II, and vivid hallucinations which made her see polka dots everywhere, had a heavy influence on her artistic output.
Her seminal pieces Mirror/Infinity rooms challenge the viewer to an environment where light seems to be infinitely reflected by mirrors, creating the illusion of a never-ending space.
