Building an Understanding of Accounting
In my internship called MetaBronx I was placed into the finance team and learned about accounting. Accounting is the organization of finance data and is a fundamental part of business.
My experience with accounting was organizing data for a restaurant's tax return (called La Riviera). In the beginning Sarah, a co-founder of the Glass Files and operator of the restaurant, taught the finance team how to input and organize the data in the statements she was given for the business credit cards. She taught us about credit and debit transactions. This helped my team pull data from these statements for the tax returns.
The overall accounting part of the tax return didn’t seem too difficult for me as you needed to input numbers and find certain companies for transactions, but I soon found that if you have more than 1 credit card with a different company, in this case it was Chase and Wells Fargo, you have to create a different row with your different account numbers. This can make things a bit complicated as now you have to mix your other card transactions with the others.
Throughout the weeks I’ve built my understanding of accounting as before I thought accounting was only the person looking at where the money is going and figure out if it’s sustainable.
I’ve learned that accounting requires attention to detail, managing multiple accounts, and strong organization skills. Overall this has influenced my view on accounting and my interest on pursuing a career in finance positively because I can see that I am able to understand the basics of accounting easily, and I am able to clearly manage and organize these multiple accounts.
