Super Bowl LI - New England Patriots vs. Atlanta Falcons
A historic Super Bowl for the 51st championship game.
No Super Bowl had ever gone into overtime, and no quarterback had ever won more than 4 Super Bowls.
By half time the Atlanta Falcons seemed in total control of the game, leading 28-3.
But the New England Patriots scored 25 unanswered points in the 2nd half to tie the game at 28.
And this is where American football is unique in professional team sports around the world; there is no other team sport where momentum can sway the game more quickly and resolutely.
By the end of the 4th quarter, the Falcons, who had executed flawlessly in the first half, we're completely incapable of regaining composure; as if they were staring up at a giant approaching steamroller.
When the Patriots won the toss and selected to get the ball at the beginning of the overtime period, i felt like the game was already over.
Which is remarkable because the game was tied, the Patriots would have to score a touchdown to win the game on the first possession, and the Falcons are an excellent team that was perfectly capable of beating their opponent, as they proved in the first half of regulation.
Psychology won the day - morale, momentum, confidence, resilience.
