Last Month May of 2021 was Haitian Heritage month. During the country's history, it had three names: Ayiti, Saint Domingue and Hispaniola. Before 1492, there were two people that inhabited the country The tainos and Arawaks. They called the land Ayiti or the land of the mountains.
In 1492, when Spain colonized the country they called it Hispaniola or Little Spain. In 1625, when the French colonized the country they called it Saint Domingue or as the rest of the world know it " La Perla des Antilles (The pearl of the Caribbean).
In 1804, when Haitians gained their independence, they decided to honor the Tainos and Arawaks as true inhabitants of the land by giving it its original name, Its maternal name Ayiti.
