Family is a source of strength. A thousand years ago, the Original Vampire family swore it to each other. They promised to stay together for the rest of their lives. Hundreds of years have passed, and family ties have been broken. The Original Family has been torn apart by time, tragedy, and a desire for power.
When the Original Vampire-Werewolf Hybrid, Niklaus Mikaelson, receives a mysterious tip that a plot against him is brewing in the supernatural melting pot known as New Orleans' French Quarter, he returns to the city his family helped build. Klaus' questions lead him to a reunion with Marcel, a charismatic vampire who wields complete control over the human and supernatural inhabitants of New Orleans.
Elijah follows Klaus, determined to help his brother find redemption, and soon discovers that the werewolf Hayley has also come to the French Quarter in search of answers to her family's past, and has fallen into the hands of a powerful witch named Sophie.
As Marcel commands his devoted followers and rules with absolute power, tensions between the town's supernatural factions are approaching a breaking point. It is unthinkable for Klaus to answer to his powerful protégé, and he vows to reclaim what was once his — power, the city, and his family. While they wait to see if their sister Rebekah will leave Mystic Falls and join them, Klaus and Elijah form an uneasy alliance with the witches to ensure that New Orleans will be ruled by THE ORIGINALS once again.
