Hobbies: The Best Distraction From Todays Issues.
Today people all over the world have hobbies. From running to reading, people find pleasure in the activities they participate in during their free time. This is especially true for us teenagers. Hobbies are not only productive ways to pass time but they also help mental health. “Spending time on an activity that you enjoy can improve your mental health and well being. Research shows that people with hobbies are less likely to suffer from stress, low mood, and depression. Activities that get you out and about can make you feel happier and more relaxed. Group activities like team sports can improve your communication skills and relationships with others.” (Australian Government Department of Health, 2019). So I went around and asked some high school students (who will remain anonymous) about their hobbies and how it affects them.
One student has stated that writing is a way that she can express her emotions and clear her head space. She also feels that the characters that she writes about show her how she is feeling and reveals the emotions she didn't even know she was feeling. Another student shared that photography has been a really helpful outlet for her. She also shared that her photos help her express herself and show how she is feeling when words can't describe it for her. Another student really surprised me when he said cleaning is therapeutic for him. He says he likes to mash pleasure and productivity into one and uses it as a way to reflect and get stuff done. Hobbies can be as unique as cleaning or as simple as painting. Another student expressed that painting has been her outlet since she was a kid. She always enjoyed art class and it stuck with her as she got older. She uses it to express how she feels and encourages other teenagers to use painting or any type of art as an outlet. This last student didn't have to hear this advice to take up dance as a hobby. She says that she feels free and her true self when she dances. She says that dancing made her who she is today and she doesn't know where she would be in life if dancing didn't exist.
Hobbies are things that everyone has whether they realize it or not. They are wonderful things that make up who you are and what you like. Just like all of the teens interviewed here, I recommend everyone to engage in a hobby. They are great ways to express how you feel and you never know your child/teen hood hobby may lead to your future career.
