Dark Souls - Longplay Full Game 100% Walkthrough [No Commentary] 4k
Everything about this game is unusual, breathtaking, and dark.
I don't think i know of another game where the physical environments are so minutely crafted, with some that are truly magnificent like Anor Londo (of course), Darkroot Garden, The Duke's Archives, and Ash Lake. This isn't virtual reality but somehow even just watching gameplay gives you memories of having been to these places!!
The sound design is also unmatched, with variations in sonic environments strongly reinforcing the feeling of "having been there" so that even though it's evident that these places you're traveling through do not exist, as the player you still exist within them. Magic.
Personally i always preferred 2-D video games over 3-D video games because even though 2-D is more obviously fake, it can create the feeling of reality whereas 3-D always looked more real but felt more fake to me. But this game, like 'Journey', puts this preference of mine to the test.
In fact i strongly suspect that Nintendo's gigantic 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' (2017) was heavily inspired if not lifted outright from 'Dark Souls'. The only differences i can see between the two is that in BOTW you can climb stuff, and of course the tone of the game which is super dark in Dark Souls.
And it really is super dark, from the lighting to the story, the ending - philosophical and heart-wrenching, forcing the player to make decisions that only a psychopath would enjoy having to go through. There again i don't think there's another game that isn't in the horror genre, which has such a twisted psychology. Certainly no other game is this twisted and yet plays like a thoroughly enjoyable adventure game.
It's clear that you need a lot of time to learn how to play it however, and to explore every aspect of it, because it's evidently extremely difficult, you can tell just by watching gameplay.
