It's been about a year since I have been learning the Limon style of modern dance with my teacher Mary Ford Sussman, and I love it.
Jose Limón was originally from Culiacán, Mexico and came to New York to study art, discover dance and became a choreographer.
Last week I had the opportunity to see the Limon company perform at the 92nd Street Y. We saw a Doris Humphries solo, then La Malinche, and the Moor's Pavane (based on Shakespeare's Othello), and one last piece whose name escapes me it was so mesmerizing, a re-imagining of a lost dance by Doris Humphries. She was the artistic director of the Jose Limon Dance Company when it was founded in 1947 in NYC.
I hope to learn more about the creative collaboration of Jose Limón and Doris Humphries!
