H-1B Immigration: America's Secret Weapon - Michio Kaku
Where are these geniuses?
How about WINNING NOBEL PRIZES FOR AMERICA? In 2016, ALL American winners of the Nobel Prize in economics and scientific fields WERE IMMIGRANTS. Since 2000, immigrants have been awarded 40%, or 31 of 78, of the Nobel Prizes won by Americans in Chemistry, Medicine and Physics.
How about DRIVING INNOVATIONS AND PATENTS?
Foreign nationals -- those living in the United States who are not citizens -- contributed to an estimated 24.2 percent of international patent applications.
How about CREATING NEW INDUSTRIES?
Immigrants founded more than half of U.S. unicorns (i,e startup companies valued at $1 billion or more). Moreover, almost half of the top 50 start-ups in the U.S. were founded or co-founded by immigrants. Immigrant entrepreneurs founded 25.3 percent of the U.S. engineering and technology companies established in the past decade.
How about CREATING JOBS FOR AMERICANS?
The National Bureau of Economic Research recently concluded that each new immigrant generates 1.2 local jobs. In particular, U.S. Chamber of Commerce found that every foreign-born student who graduates from a U.S. university with an advanced degree and stays to work in STEM has been shown to create on average 2.62 jobs for American workers.
How about CREATING NEW BUSINESSES?
Immigrants are twice as likely to start a new business as someone born in the U.S.. Since the recession hit, immigrant investment has boomed. In 2008, immigrants represented about 17% of all new business owners in the U.S. By 2011, immigrants were creating 28% of all new businesses. Immigrant-owned businesses are more likely to export their goods and services. Among immigrant businesses, 7.1% export compared with only 4.4% for non-immigrant businesses.
Is that enough of a contribution for you? Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they don't exist.
